Why do you call me a squatter in this land?
I was born here just like you, a free man
No doubt, my ancestors came from India
But didn’t yours come from Indonesia?
The best years of my life were when I was a child
Me and you, we used to run wild
Playing all those wonderful games
How I wish things could be the same!
Then both of us went to school to study
Even though you did not need to spend any money
You had all the privileges due to your colour
Whereas people like me had to suffer
Unfair quotas and stupid restrictions
All based on race and religion
We had to do things the hard way
Whereas you had a lot of help along the way
It didn’t matter to any of us anyway
We were used to being discriminated and brushed away
Even though I look different from you
Does it really mean that I am a lesser Malaysian than you?
